The Errand of Angels- Day one

I have had a ton of people tell me that I should see the new movie "Errand of Angels." It's the new movie about sister missionaries. I always tell these people that I don't really want to see it, since I lived it. I also think my mission was more movie worthy than that girl's. So, here is MY movie script..tell me what you think

THE ERRAND OF ANGELS IS GIVEN TO WOMEN..if this is the case, then either I am an angel or I had quite an errand.
I remember one particular night when I think the angels were on an errand on their own. It was a dark night, deep in the winter of 1995 in Ontario, Canada. Three sister missionaries in a teal, Chevy Cavalier traveling down an empty, rural road amid a snow storm, heading to our apartment. The three of us were nervous, sensing the alone status of our vehicle and the vast, cold night aoutside the car. We had been out to a mobile home on the outskirts of town to deliver a Book of Mormon to a Mr Smits, whom we had heard was interested in the book. As the late hour approached, we climbed into the vehicle and drove back to town. The nervousness of the situation led us to begin to sing hymns to unrattle our nerves. The hymn choice that night was "As Sisters in Zion."

And so the mission story begins...
I had arrived in Owen Sound, a mid sized town on the edge of Lake Huron. The Sound was completely frozen solid, allowing snowmobiles to drive across it. Ships that had been docked before the cold set in, were resting in their seasonal tomb until the onset of spring.
I had left Provo, Utah during an unseasonably warm February where shirt sleeves were all that were required for warmth. Arriving in Owen Sound at the end of February was as if I had travelled back in time three months previously, to the dead of winter.
I looked around at this foreign land, at the foreign people and wondered why I had been so excited to come here in the first place. Not only had I left warmth, but also a fantastic basketball season of my dad's and brother's high school team.
What was I doing here? Who were these two girls that wouldn't leave me alone? Why won't they let me read my mail from home?? Needless to say, although it was just Canada, I was a foreigner in a strange land.
The sisters I were assigned to be with wanted me to jump head first into the work. We immediatley found an apartment complex and began knocking on doors. I wondered where our apartment was, where I could use a bathroom, and where was my next meal going to come from. These sisters, however, wanted to knock on strangers doors!!
After knocking on ten doors, and ten refusals, Sister Watson looked at me and told me it was my turn. I was instructed to imagine the person behind the door -dressed in white and ready to be baptized- and say whatever the Spirit directs me to say. In my head, I told myself to say, "Hi, wer are missionaries from teh Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints." I was set! If I just said that , the person behind the door would hear who we were and slam the door- and my first door approach would be over. So, I knocked. As the door opened, there stood a man dressed in white, only he looked like he had just been baptized-for his hair was wet and the white was a small towel wrapped around his waist! Well, not wanting to look incompetent, I began to introduce myself. I told Mr. Dressed in White Ready To Be Baptized Man that we would like to come in and share something wonderful with him. So Mr. Dressed In White Ready To Be Baptized let us in.
As exciting as this was, as soon as Mr. DIWRTBB sat down, he crossed his legs- man style- showing us just how manly he was. My companions whispered, "We should go!" But, again, wanting to impress, I began the first discussion, stratigically placing the flipchart in eye shot of Mr Show Us All. I eventually got the idea he was just lonely for some pretty girls and left, amid giggles from my Comps..AND THUS BEGAN DAY ONE

Oh man! What a welcome that must have been. At least it was a good ice breaker. It couldn't get more exciting than that, right?
I am looking forward to hearing all about day two. Was it as great?

This story has always made me wonder...um, well... how shall I put this? Given that everything up there was so cold & frozen at the time, & the guy was wet and almost naked & most certainly chilled standing there with the door open - why exactly was he so anxious to show off his... ahem ... manliness?

Kevin, great male perspective on the story!! I'll ask my husband to see if he knows the answer!
Love the blog, Stacy. Keep it up. This one didn't have any reference to missing me. But, it did have pics of the kids!
Keep going. It's a great way to see what you're up to!

I'm sure it was just an innocent mistake - he was so interested in what Stacy had to say he just forgot he was mostly naked.

So did you give him the full discussion? I always wondered if you're comps were trying to give you signals to get out of there. Glad he let you leave! mom
