Brother discourages extrovert Sister from greeting every stranger she meets. When Papa tells the cubs why they should never talk to strangers, Sister begins to view all strangers as evil. This is conveyed by a full-page spread: the top half shows reality, the bottom half shows Sister's scary version. Then Mama brings some common sense to the problem by explaining the concept of the bad apples in every barrel, literally. A funny looking apple is fine on the inside, but a perfect looking apple is bad on the inside. Just as sister understands how to react, a stranger with a toy airplane almost causes the usually cautious Brother to go for a ride. Sister runs to tell her parents because she is concerned for Brother's safety. The Bears' rules for safe conduct among strangers are listed on the last pages, including a rule about the privacy of a bear's body. A good book to start awareness in young children.
I know there are scary people out there--but I would hate to think that we stop living just to avoid them. I also think there have always been scary people. We need to teach our kids basic human skills and how to not allow yourself to get into a compromising situation. This book is great for kids 5 and up- and a great conversation starter!

Thanks for the recommendation, I totally have this boo! We dug it out for good old FHE and had a great discussion. I thought the apple analogy was pretty good. Teacher/librarian Stacy saves the day!
See I will send my kids to you for reading and fun outings...then I'll take your kids for crafts. I think we could work something out here. :-)
PS I liked the Jack-o-lantern idea...Another I had was to just put him in a box and call him "Jack in the Box". :-)
Don't even worry about the noise...its not like you can control it anyways. I feel bad for you guys with it being right on your roof! Hopefully they finish is soon for you guys!
Actually the dog that bit me lives over on 2200 West. Its the first house on the East side of the road when you turn South from Sugar Factory onto 2200. So its not in the neighborhood but still all the kids go by there. And as far as the gate goes....Did Halen tell you she closes it? I haven't ever closed it, but I personally wouldn't mind people closing ours either if it got left open..which it does lots. So, let me know about the gate thing..that's actually the first I've heard about it.
